Description:This is an example of an early production Burgess slide action shotgun with the Damascus pattern barrel. The Burgess gun company was established in 1892 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well known arms producers. These shotguns were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Firearms Company. Features a single bead sight, improved modified choke, and length of pull 14 inches. The full length Damascus steel barrel has a solid matte rib. The breechblock cover is marked "BURGESS GUN CO./BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A." The underside of the receiver has the serial number and two-line patent marking. The forearm and pistol grip are checkered. The buttstock is fitted with a factory dog head embossed checkered hard rubber buttplate.
Rating Definition:Fine. The barrel retains half of the original Damascus pattern with a smooth gray patina. The remaining metal surfaces retain 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The revarnished wood is very good with some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
