This pair of early 19th century officer's or dueling pistols is marked "WM. LAING" on the lock plates and "EDINR" on the barrels. William Laing is listed in the Edinburgh Post Office Directory for 1822-1823 as a gunmaker at 22 Lothian Street. The upper left barrel flats also have British cross scepter proofmarks. The furniture has light floral engraving. The full length stocks have checkered grips and silver thumb pieces, wedge escutcheons, and grip caps. Each pistol has a wooden ramrod with brass tip. The pair comes in a fitted hardwood case with green baize lined interior, powder flask, bullet mold, cleaning rod, and a flint.
Fair. The barrel has an oil stained artificial brown patina with light pitting. The lock has been cleaned to a dull gray patina and also has light pitting. The trigger guard and ramrod pipes have a gray patina and traces of original finish. The silver has an aged patina. The stock is fine with a crack at the tail of the lock plate, sharp checkering, and minor scrapes and dings. The lock functions fine. The markings are identifiable. The case is fine with mild storage type wear overall, the label absent, moderate wear to the lining, and a few cracks and chips primarily on the interior. The accessories are also fine.
