Description:

This musket was manufactured by Daniel Nippes of Mill Creek, Pennsylvania, as part of a government contract for Model 1840 flintlock muskets between 1842 and 1848. In addition to the original contract, Nippes received two more around 1848/49 for converting 2,000 muskets, mostly those he had already manufactured, using the then new Maynard tape primer system. This early style conversion uses the first style pawl type primer mechanism and is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/1845" on the tape compartment door. The lock plate is stamped "MILL/CREEK/PA/1842" behind the hammer. No markings are visible on the barrel or breech plug. The buttplate is marked "US" parallel to the bore. It has a blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, a stud on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle for a socket bayonet (not included), a trumpet head ramrod, sling swivels on the middle band and front of the trigger guard, and a smooth, nearly full length stock with two cartouches on the left flat.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have been buffed heavily to bright at the breech and most of the others have been cleaned and display patches of brown patina. There are patches of light to mild pitting throughout and some file marks and deeper pitting towards the breech. The lock has dark case colors mixed with dark patina, light pitting, and some minor oxidation. The stock is also good as sanded and refinished with some small chips, a repair above the lock, a few slight hairline cracks, and attractive, smooth finish. The cartouches on left side are barely visible. The lock functions excellently, and most of the markings are distinct.
