Description:Manufactured in 1871, this is an example of a Winchester Model 17866 lever action rifle. The top barrel flat is marked, "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." directly ahead of the rear sight and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Dovetailed blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The upper tang is equipped with a composite long range peep sight that has a factory base and a custom made staff. The barrel, magazine tube and loading gate were finished blue, and the receiver, forend cap and buttplate are nickel plated. The stock and forend cap are fitted with a factory installed sling swivels. Mounted with a nicely figured smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate and compartment (cleaning rod not included).
Rating Definition:Very good as replated/refinished. The barrel, magazine tube and lever have a smooth dark patina. The crisp forend cap, receiver and buttplate retain 95% nickel plating with edge wear and flaking on the buttstock compartment cover and lower tang. The barrel address has been recut and remains clear. The highly figured replacement wood is also very good with some scattered minor dings. Dents and scratches. The action functions fine.
