The factory letter confirms that the serial number was applied to this rifle on May 16, 1902, but was not received in the Winchester warehouse until June 19 of that year. It shipped the following day as part of order number 143721 in takedown rifle configuration with a 24 inch, .30 caliber, round barrel; "extra light," plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with rubber buttplate, Lyman sights, and 1/2 magazine. This is a beautiful example of a very scarce early Model 1894 Winchester lever action rifle that has several deluxe special order features. The stock and forearm are XXX fancy walnut. It has a short range "Winchester Express" rear sight with three leaves and a Lyman short range tang peep sight. The barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." on top ahead of the rear sight, and the left rear side is marked "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". The caliber designation ".30 W.C.F." is stamped on the breech. The serial number is marked on the underside of the receiver. The stock, as noted, is a beautiful extra fancy burl walnut with an original hard rubber Winchester marked grip cap and shotgun buttplate.
Excellent. The rifle retains 97% plus of the original Winchester factory blue finish with some minor streaking on the sides of the receiver. The hammer retains nearly all of its original case colors, and the lever retains 80% of its original case colors with some fading on the underside. The stock and forend both have minimal handling marks and both retain most of the original hand rubbed oil finish having faded somewhat on the side due to its age. The checkering is crisp. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. This is a very scarce, fairly early Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Winchester Lever Action Rifle in exceptional condition.
