This Hepburn was manufactured circa the mid-1880s and has a pinched German silver blade front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear sight, and an added modern long range Vernier peep sight. It is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with metal Schnabel tip and a buttstock with multi-point checkered round knob semi-pistol grip and shotgun style steel buttplate. The matching serial number is marked on the lower tang, end of the forearm, and bottom barrel flat. The barrel is also marked "40 1 7/8" ahead of the forearm on the bottom. "40" is also marked on the inside of the forearm. The top of the barrel has the earlier one-line "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y." address behind the rear sight. The right side of the action has the two-line Hepburn patent information.
Fine. The barrel retains 60% of the faded original blue finish and has a brown patina forming. Some fiery and partially faded case colors remain, but it otherwise has a gray patina with some spotting. The modern professionally made peep sight retains 90% plus of the niter blue finish. The wood is fine with sharp checkering, some slight scratches, residue from an old label, and some cracking on the toe. It is mechanically excellent and has legible markings.
