Winchester Model 1886 Take-Down Rifle manufactured in 1904. This rifle has a special order nickel-plated receiver, take-down collar and forearm cap with deluxe, fancy grain walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The stock and forearm have "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The stock has a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and a black, checkered, hard rubber shotgun style buttplate with the Winchester logo embossed in a circle in the center. A gold oval plate inlaid in the underside of the stock and inscribed "William E. Gurley". The 24 inch round barrel and half-magazine are blued. The barrel has a special order Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with white bead and a special order Lyman No. 6, two leaf folding rear sight with wide vee notch on the front leaf and bright triangle on the rear leaf. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two unequal lines. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is stamped on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the barrel is stamped with the Winchester oval, "W/P" proof mark followed by the caliber designation "33 W.C.F.". A second proof mark is stamped on the top of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "137337" is stamped on the lower tang.
Very fine as factory replated. The rifle retains 95% of the original blue finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel, half magazine and bolt. The blue finish on the loading gate is faded to a plum-colored patina. The forearm cap, takedown collar and receiver have 98% of the replated nickel finish with minimal wear. Most of the casehardened finish remains on the hammer, trigger and lever. The highly figured stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain at least 95% of the piano finish. The checkering is sharp with minimal handling wear. This is an attractive example of a Deluxe Model 1886 Take-Down Rifle.
