This fantastic pair of engraved pinfire large bore pistols feature smooth bore barrels that gauge at 70 caliber. Although there are no maker markings on the pistols, the craftsmanship denotes a high quality period gunsmith. The barrel has a single brass bead front sight. Brown Damascus barrel with the remaining metal surfaces casehardened. A beautifully executed engraved scroll and dot pattern is featured on the forearm, trigger guard, barrel tang, hammer, lock plate and buttcap. The grip area of the stock features deeply carved flutes. The French style contour rosewood case features brass hardware and an emerald velour lining. The case holds both pistols and several accessories which include rosewood handled reloading tools, Dixson & Sons powder flask, single cavity bullet mold, nipple wrench and case key. These types of large bore firearms were often used in large exotic game hunts such as tigers and elephants.
Extremely fine. The barrel retains 80% plus original brown finish and Damascus patterns with some loss at the muzzle and some mild high edge wear. The remaining metal surfaces have faded to an attractive gray. The stock is also very fine with some minor pressure dents with most of the varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing a few age cracks along the grain, some minor handling/storage marks and some high spot wear on the lining. A beautiful pair of cased large bore pistols that one does not often find on the open market!
