This is an excellent example of a desirable 50 Express Caliber Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle that was manufactured in 1901. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with bead and a sporting style rear sight. A folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The original shotgun buttplate has been replaced with a later production Winchester rubber recoil pad. The top barrel flat is marked MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber ".50 EX" is stamped at the breech. The lower receiver tang is stamped "-PAT.OCT.14.1884./JAN. 20. 1885-" directly behind the trigger and the serial number "127011" is stamped at the rear. Full length magazine, blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The Winchester .50 Caliber Express cartridge was introduced in 1899 for the Model 1886 Rifle. High velocity smokeless powder versions of the .50 Express cartridge were comparable to some British elephant cartridges.
Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish with some minor takedown marks on the magazine tube, thinning and some bright edge wear. The receiver takedown ring extension has a 50-50 mix of original blue finish and blue-gray patina. The receiver has several minor scratches. The hammer and loading lever have nearly all of the original casehardened finish with strong case colors. The loading gate has a silver-gray patina. The reoiled stock and forearm are very fine with some scattered and very minor handling marks. The later production Winchester recoil pad and spacer fit nicely to the stock. This is an excellent example of a scarce and desirable Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle chambered for the .50 W.C.F. Express cartridge.
