This is an excellent example of late manufactured U.S. Army M15 General Officer pistol complete with the GO issue leather holster, magazine pouch, two M1911A1 magazines and cleaning equipment, as issued to BG Clifford C. Ryan in Sept 1980. These M15 pistols were manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal starting in the early 1970s through approximately 1985 when the US Army adopted the Beretta M9 Beretta pistol. These pistols were manufactured by using a standard M1911A1 pistol, milling off old markings and then applying the new markings, shortening the slide and barrel assembly to 4 1/2 inches, installed a high profile front and rear sights. Additionally they hand checkered the front grip strap. The left side of the slide is marked: "General Officer Model/RIA" with "Serial No. GO 369" on the right side of the frame above the grips. The grips are checkered walnut and the right side was inlayed with a cast, RIA, Ordnance Corp emblem that consists of the "crossed-cannons" surrounded with a leather belt" insignia with "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL" on the belt, with the Shell/Flame and Ordnance Bomb at the top. In this fine example the left grip panel is inlaid with a small silver name plate, that is engraved "C. G. Ryan". The pistol has a highly polished blue finish on all the parts and the barrel is chrome plated. The magazines also have a polished and blue floor plates and are electro-penciled with the pistol serial number on the lower left side. This pistol is complete with an open-top black leather holster with single strap marked on the back "BUCHEIMER, VALENCIA CALIF/CLARK, B16-74", a black leather double magazine pouch with brass fittings marked on the back: "U.S./DSA-100-69-C-0049", a steel pistol cleaning rod, bore brush, and cardboard shipping box. This specific M15 General Officer Pistol was issued in Sept 1980 and includes the original DD1149 Requisition and Invoice Shipping Document from Rock Island Arsenal, the Bill of Sale (from RIA) to General Ryan and a short biography on Gen Ryan. It also comes with an extra unmarked brown commercial leather revolver holster, (probably for a S&W Model 10 revolver). General Ryan had a 31 year career with the U.S. Army, beginning with his enlistment in April 1944, where he served in the European theater until July 1946. He returned to Detroit, enrolled in Michigan State and at the same time entered the R.O.T.C. program. He completed his degree in Police Administration 1950 and joined the Detroit Police Dept., in July 1951 at the start of the Korean War. He again enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until late 1953, where he then reverted to reserve status. He then did double duty with both the Detroit Police Dept and the U.S. Army on a reserve basis, eventually retiring from the U.S. Army reserves in 1974 and the Detroit Police Dept in 1975. In both professions; the Detroit Police Dept and the Military Police Branch of the U.S. Army reserves, he held numerous command positions, received several advanced degrees and accolades for his accomplishments. Following his retirement from the Detroit Police Dept. he was appointed as the Supervisor of Investigations at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn Michigan.
Excellent plus with 99% of the original blue finish overall with just a hint of slide retraction wear on the front of slide and some scratches overall. The walnut grips are also in excellent condition with nice deep crisp original checkering with no visible marks anywhere. The pistol maybe test fired only and just carried by the General. The holsters, belt, mag pouch and mags are all in excellent condition.
