This is an exceptional example of a pre-war Colt Model 1911A1 Super Match semi-automatic pistol with factory letter that states it was in a shipment of 50 guns shipped November 8, 1946, to J.L. Galef & Son in New York, New York. These Super Match pistols were manufactured in sequence with the standard Colt 38 Supers, except they featured a hand honed action, adjustable Stevens rear sights, (standard front and rear sight could also be ordered) and then received the high polished blue finish with all checkered walnut grip panels. Only approximately 5,000 of these special higher grade, target pistols were produced in total. The right side of the slide is marked "SUPER MATCH/COLT SUPER .38/AUTOMATIC" followed by the Rampant Colt motif. The barrel is marked "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO MATCH" above the lug on the left side, and there is also an "M.S" inside a circle below this marking. The opposite side of the slide has two line Colt's address markings above their 1897-1913 patent dates. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with a small number "5" over the Colt "VP", verified proof and the right side is marked "77". It has the fixed front sight with serrated face and Stevens adjustable rear sight, blue barrel with polished chamber, serrated slide lock, checkered trigger, checkered thumb safety, and checkered arched main spring housing, along with a Colt narrow spur checkered hammer. It is complete with one two-tone magazine marked "COLT SUPER/38 AUTO" on the base plate.
Excellent with 99% original finish with scattered minor handling scratches, a few on the grip strap, with very minor sharp edge wear on the muzzle end of the slide and heel of the grip frame. The replacement grips are excellent showing minor handling with sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
