This Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1862 ironically as a civilian model during the Civil War. This is a commercial production, middle fourth model revolver with a capping channel in the recoil shield cut-out. The revolver has the "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" on the top of the barrel and is marked "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame. The full serial number is on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap with a "2" under or over each one and on some additional parts. "9694" is stamped on the loading lever, and the correct partial serial number "7696" is marked on the cylinder. It is fitted with a one piece varnished walnut grip.
Fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original blue finish on the barrel and cylinder with a brown patina present on the balance of the exposed surfaces. The frame has a gray patina with 25% plus case colors still visible. The silver plating on the trigger guard and grip strap is absent with attractively aged brass visible. The grips are fine with some minor dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
