Description:

This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare, Remington-Keene bolt action "carbine". This design was Remington's first attempt at producing a repeating rifle intending to compete with Winchester's lever action rifles and carbines. These were produced around 1880-1884 with only a handful of the "carbine" models ever produced. Making this carbine version a very scarce model. The vast majority of the production being the rifle configuration (approximately 5000 rifles). The top of the bolt is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILLION NY/PAT FEBY 24, MCH. 17.1874, JAN 18, SEPT 26, 1876, MCH 20, JULY 31 1877.". The barrel is only 20 inches long with a full length tubular magazine. The magazine tube is loaded through a loading gate in the bottom of the receiver in front of the trigger guard. The bolt rotates up and pulls back and has an exposed hammer that is manually cocked. The rear sight is a short Remington factory carbine model that is marked "1-3" (100-300 yards) on the left side of the staff and "4-9" (400-900) on the right side with a standard carbine front sight dovetailed into the front barrel band. The stock is a one piece straight grip carbine version that is fitted with a carbine buttplate that has a trapdoor in the middle. It has a set of factory sling swivels on the underside of the stock and forend cap. It does not include a cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the original blue finish overall with some light brown spotting on the barrel and magazine tube with thinning/browning on the trigger guard/trigger plate mixed with some very fine pin-prick type pitting on the trigger guard itself. The bolt is still in its original "in the white" factory finish. The hammer and forend cap both retain 85% plus of their original case colors and the buttplate shows 60% of it case colors mixed with a brown patina. The stock is in excellent condition with a beautiful dark red factory oil finish with only some minor handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent. A super nice looking, high condition, rare Remington-Keene bolt action carbine.
