This superb set of Italian officers flintlock pistols was handcrafted by the Royal Arms Factory in Naples and commissioned during Napoleon's reign as King of Italy. The Kingdom of Italy, the French puppet state founded in Northern Italy by Napoleon I, was governed by Napoleon's step-son, Eugene de Beauharnais, from its creation on March 17, 1805 until its fall on April 11, 1814. Eugene de Beauharnais was only 24 when he was made Viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy. The pistols were manufactured circa 1808. The lock is chiseled in high relief and the hammer, frizzen and mainspring are pierced. The barrel has an original blue finish imitating damascus and the remaining metal surfaces were originally polished. The rear barrel section features a deeply struck gold highlighted motif along with "FABR/DI/IAP" and a large crown over a script "R", which are also highlighted in gold and deeply struck. The lock plate also has a deeply stuck gold highlighted proof. The engraved lock plate screw escutcheon is in the shape of feathered wings. The pistol has French Empire style steel mounts which are finely engraved in the Boutet style and are the highest Boutet quality. This includes the buttcap. The full length stock has a checkered grip area with deep grooves on the back. The pistol has a button head steel ramrod. The Royal Arms Factory in Naples strongly influenced Neopolitan arms production by the Royal Arms Factory in Naples, which was establish in 1757.
Extremely fine. The barrel retains 95% plus of the original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown. The remaining polished metal surfaces have a very attractive appearance. The stock is fine with a long hairline crack near the lock, a repair in the grip area and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. One of the finest pairs of Italian flintlock pistols we have ever offered.
