This magnificent Winchester Model 1894 rifle features No. 2 factory engraving as illustrated in "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS". The ornamentation includes highly detailed gold inlaid game animals on a background of fine engraved scrollwork, gold-inlaid borders on the bolt, hammer, lever, link, frame, barrel and forearm and fine scrollwork. The game scenes feature a pair of moose and a pair of deer rather than the single animal scenes shown in "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS". The deluxe fancy grain forearm and pistol grip stock have "Style H" checkering and a highly polished piano finish. The rifle has a takedown, 26 inch octagon barrel and half-magazine. The barrel has dovetail mounted sporting style front and rear sights. The highly figured deluxe walnut stock has a black hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and a black hard rubber checkered shotgun style buttplate embossed with the Winchester logo. The left barrel flat is die-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894." ahead of the rear sight. "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is die stamped on the left side of the barrel immediately below the rear sight and the caliber ".30 W.C.F." is stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The oval "W/P" Winchester proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver in engraved panels. The upper receiver tang is die-stamped "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.U.S.PAT.OFF.& FGN" in three lines with gold-inlaid borders. The serial number "880278" is stamped across the bottom of the receiver. Provenance: Mac McCroskie Collection.
Excellent plus. The rifle is all original and retains 98% of the bright original blue finish overall. The blue on the barrel and magazine is nearly all intact. The forearm cap, top of the bolt, upper receiver tang and lever have very light handling wear. The scroll engraving is extremely crisp and the extraordinary gold inlaid game scenes and gold inlaid borders are perfect. The excellent stock and forearm retain nearly all of the original piano finish with sharp checkering; wear is limited to a few very minor handling and storage marks. This is a magnificent example of a rare and beautiful Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle with Factory Engraved No. 2 pattern gold inlays, game scenes and scroll engraving. This is quite possibly, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the finest Winchester Model 1894 extant!
