Description:This is an excellent example of a very scarce DWM Model 1908 German Navy Luger. These Lugers were all manufactured in the standard 1908 Commercial serial number range that were pressed into Navy service. During the expansion of the Imperial German Navy prior to 1914, the Navy ran out of serviceable Lugers to issue to the new fleets. As such they recalled Lugers from many of the sea going fleets to reissue to the standard warships. With their navy contracts with DWM already completed, they literally ran out of Lugers to issue. In their haste to find suitable Lugers they purchased approximately 300 1908 commercial Lugers, reproofed them with the standard Crown/M Navy proofs and issued them. In all respects they appear as standard 1908 commercial Lugers. The chamber area is blank and the front toggle has the standard "DWM" logo. The left side of the barrel extension as noted has the single "Crown/M" proofmark with the standard "Crown/N" commercial proofs. A magazine hold-open has been installed. It is correctly numbered in the commercial fashion. It is complete with a correct nickel plated magazine with a blank wooden base. A very unusual and very scarce 1908 Navy Commercial Luger pistol.
Rating Definition:Excellent with 97% of the blue finish with edge and high spot wear. The various small parts retain 60% of a fading straw colors. The grips are excellent with nice distinct checkering on both sides, showing even honest wear overall. As noted this rare Luger has all matching numbers except the magazine.
