These rifles were based on the tried and true U.S. Model 1903 bolt action rifle as a sporting rifle. There were approximately 5,538 NRA Sporter rifles produced between 1921 and 1939 with this example being manufactured in 1932. (Springfield Armory needed to keep their workers employed as no war was taking place in this period of history). These rifles could be ordered directly from Springfield Armory by NRA members and were used by several other commercial companies to make custom deluxe rifles. The muzzle end of the barrel has the star gauge marking and just behind the standard blade front sight is marked "S A/flaming bomb/9- 32". The receiver has the standard markings and has a fully adjustable Lyman 48C rear peep sight mounted to the right rear. The bolt is bright with "N.S." stamped on the top flat of the bolt knob, a "7" stamped on the bottom flat and the matching serial number electro penciled on the underside. Mounted on a smooth walnut pistol grip stock with a circled "P" proofmark on the front of the pistol grip and a checkered cupped steel buttplate.
Excellent, 97% plus of the original blue finish remains with some scratches and brown patina on the front sight and some minor wear on the barrel band and buttplate. There are a few areas of surface oxidation on the floor plate and trigger guard. The stock is also excellent with a few light handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent. A rare opportunity for an excellent, all original Springfield Model 1903 NRA Sporter!
