This scarce Third Model Porter Turret Rifle is quickly recognized by the absence of a magazine, the visible percussion nipples and side mounted hammer. When the lever is lowered, the hammer cocks and when pulled back up, the eight shot turret advances. The rifle correctly does not have provisions for a loading lever or a turret cover. The upper left barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS/P.W. PORTER/NEW-YORK" and "P.W. PORTERS/PATENT/1851" just ahead of the rear sight. All serial numbers match. Blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights (both off-set to the left). Mounted with a varnished straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. Matching numbers "708" present on external bottom of barrel internally on side of tarret, receiver, plate and catch. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
Good. The metal has traces of original blue with the balance mostly a dark patina with some heavy pitting on the breech end of the barrel and areas of lighter pitting on other areas on the barrel. There is some pitting on the hammer, turret and frame. The stock is very good with a period repaired chip on top of the wrist at the frame and some minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action needs work.
