These carbines were designed by Gilbert Smith and almost all of the production consumed by U.S. government contracts, with limited numbers going to the civilian market. The carbine has a devetail blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight absent of yard markings. The left side of the frame is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/AM'N M'CH'N. WKS/SPRINGFIELD MASS", agents' names "ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A." and "SMITH'S PATENT/JUNE 23, 1857". The breech loading action has a barrel relase latch inside the trigger guard and a saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side. The carbine has a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a steel buttplate. The left side of the barrel has U.S. Government inspector's initials "LFR" and the left side of the stock wrist has a boxed "LFR" and oval script "JH" cartouche.
Excellent. The barrel retains 95% plus original smooth plum blue finish. Most of the original bright fire blue finish remains on the latch bar and the trigger guard retains 95% bright original finish with a coat of surface rust overall. The buttplate has a smooth brown patina with some minor pitting. The receiver retains 95% vivid original case colors while the hammer retains most of the dulling case colors. The wood is excellent with a few overall minor handling marks. The markings under the ring bar are fading, otherwise the remaining markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
