This is an example of a U.S. Army Spencer Model 1860 rifle manufactured circa 1863-1864 that was Arsenal refurbished immediately after the Civil War. The front sight doubles as lug for socket type bayonet, with a folding ladder rear sight calibrated to 800 yards. The top of the receiver is stamped "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6 1860." There is a small "L" stamped on the left rear of the barrel, a small letter "P" stamped on the buttplate tang and a cartouche along with the letter "S" is stamped on the left stock wrist. Mounted on a standard military style forearm and buttstock with three barrel bands and forend tip.
Very fine as Arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 75% plus Arsenal brown. The remaining metal surfaces retain 60% muted original case colors. The wood is also very fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches with a clear DAP cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
