This is an example of a very early, all brass mounted Sharps Model 1859 percussion carbine manufactured from 1859 to 1866 with a total production of about 3,000. In addition to all brass mountings, these early carbines, (serial number 30,000 to 31332), were not marked with the "New Model" marking and had flat back breechblocks with no friction ridges. The top of the barrel is marked with the three line address ahead of the rear sight, the lock is marked with the Lawrence and Sharps patent dates and the upper left side of the receiver is marked with the two line Sharps patent date. The serial number is marked on the upper tang. The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and Lawrence patent folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The barrel was blue with casehardened remaining parts, saddle ring and bar on the left side of the receiver and stock wrist and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with brass buttplate and patch box, and iron sling swivel. The inside of the patch box door is stamped "109/117". There is a visible "WAT" oval cartouche on the left wrist. Comes with a small wooden plaque with "1859 SHARPS NEW MODEL/BRASS MOUNTED/NO FRICTION RIDGES/ON BREECHBLOCK" marked brass plate.
Very good as refinished with the barrel having an artificial brown and the remaining surfaces showing a smooth mottled brownish gray patina. The brass has an aged patina. The wood is good. The forearm has had a coat of varnish applied and shows a few minor dings. The hammer screw is an incorrect replacement. The stock has some gouging and some scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
