Production of the P.38 began at Spreewerke in late 1942 and Spreewerke used the code "cyq" that had been assigned to it at the beginning of the war. The left side of the slide is marked "P.38 cyq" and the serial number is stamped on the slide forward of the safety. The serial number is again stamped on the left side of frame in line with a "U". The "U" is repeated on the right side of the slide, as well as a Nazi Eagle firing proof and an unrecognizable marking. Only about 5,000 of these guns "0" prefix P38 pistols were produced. The front of the barrel lug is marked with the serial number, the right side is marked with an asterisk and "B g", the left side is marked with an "eagle/88" proof and "cyq" and the locking block is marked "907" on the bottom and has the correct proofs on the sides. Blue unmarked magazine and fitted with black serrated bakelite grips with a lanyard ring on the left heel.

Very fine as modified. The barrel has been shortened, with 90% original blue finish remaining showing some wear on the top of the barrel chamber area from normal usage and a smooth grayish patina on the front strap and lower portion of the trigger guard. The grips are very good with some minor wear and a few scattered minor dings. Most markings are highlighted in white and remain clear. The slide hangs up a bit, otherwise the action functions properly.
