The right side of the receiver is marked: " MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS." The opposite side is marked: "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number and "1865". The rifle is equipped with the Hadley Device and has a heavy, part octagon barrel without a forearm and a dovetailed folding globe front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight (adjuster absent). The upper tang is fitted with a replacement short range peep sight and a modified tang sight stop stud. The barrel was blue with a casehardened receiver and mounted with a smooth nicely figured straight grip stock with a brass Swiss buttplate.
Very good. The barrel retains traces of original blue finish on the barrel concentrated near the front sight and the protected area of the breech end with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The remaining surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some strong original faded case colors on the receiver. The buttplate has a pleasant, dark original aged patina. The stock is excellent with only a few minor dents and scratches, The markings remain clear. The action is excellent.
