This is an exceptional example of a Sharps New Model 1863 Military Rifle. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is marked "SHARP'S RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN" and "NEW MODEL 1863" behind the sight. The left side of the barrel just ahead of the breech is stamped "T.W.B.". The lock is marked above the hammer "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT. / APRIL 12th 1859", behind the hammer "C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT. 5th 1852" and on the left side of the receiver "C.SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12th 1848" marking. The left side of the receiver is marked with an "M". The blue barrel has a bayonet lug and block front sight with brass blade, Lawrence patent folding rear sight and casehardened receiver, lever and hammer. Mounted with a plain full length forearm with a metal forend cap and three barrel bands, sling swivel on the second barrel band, and straight grip stock with patch box, steel buttplate and sling swivel. The top of the stock directly ahead of the buttplate tang is stamped "A.W.M.", "N.S.P." on the flat ahead of the lever and three boxed cartouches on the left wrist, as well as the ribbon "DFC" cartouche usually found on the converted models.
Excellent. The barrel retains 98% original blue finish with a few minor scratches ahead of the middle barrel band. The receiver, lock plate, patch box and buttplate retain 98% plus original bright and vivid case colors. The forend cap has a smooth grayish brown patina, while the barrel bands, hammer and lower tang retain most of the original case colors with areas of smooth gray patina. The wood is also excellent with a few overall scattered minor dings and handling marks, and crisp and clear cartouches. Markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. An outstanding Sharps New Model 1863 Military rifle.
