Description:Invented in 1857, with approximately 2900 produced abroad, the Le Mat represented a significant firepower boost over other percussion revolvers of the era, integrating a 9 shot revolver and a 16 gauge "grapeshot" shotgun barrel. Made in Paris, and later passing through the proof house in London, the revolver is fitted with bead front and hammer notch rear sights, loading lever with extending arm on the left side of the lug, and "SYSTme LEMAT Bte S.G.D.G. PARIS" on top. Matching numbers are present on the barrel, frame and cylinder, with matching partial numbers on the lug retention screw and lever, "star/ LM" on the barrel and "crown/ V" and "crown/ GP" on the left side of each barrel and between the chambers on the cylinder. Hammer is marked "N" on the left, with the striker spur broken and recheckered, and the screws on the loading lever, frame and grips are floral engraved. Checkered two piece grips with engraved left escutcheon and a lanyard ring. Popular with Confederate officers during the Civil War, including General J.E.B. Stuart.
Rating Definition:Good. Pitting is visible, heaviest on the top barrel flats, backstrap and trigger guard. A mixed gray and brown patina is forming overall, darker on the cylinder with traces of original blue. Light dents are visible overall, with a replaced nipple and the recheckered striker spur. Grips are good, with mild pressure dents. Mechanically very fine.
