The included Winchester factory letter confirms the serial number, rifle configuration, the caliber, barrel shape and plain trigger. The letter states that the rifle was received in warehouse on 5 May 1904 and shipped from the warehouse on 10 May 1904 (order number 228461). The octagon barrel is stamped with the two line address/patent date marking followed by "38 W.C.F." near the breech and is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and buckhorn rear sight. The upper tang is stamped with three line model and patent date information with the serial number stamped on the underside of frame. Casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate with remaining surfaces blue. Plain forearm and straight grip stock with end cap and crescent buttplate.
Fine. The barrel and magazine retain approximately 70% original blue finish with some mild spotting and some deep pitting near the muzzle. The frame retains approximately 60% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The hammer and lever retain approximately 20% soft case colors, with the balance a smooth gray patina. The buttplate has a smooth gray-brown patina with some spotting. The wood is very good with the exception of some minor pressure dents, dings and scratches.
