This is a very nice example of a desirable WWII Liberator pistol. These were produced by the Guide Lamp Division of General Motors from 1942-1945. They were intended as a cheap and easy to produce substitute single shot pistols that could be dropped behind enemy lines to the French resistance, SOE and OSS forces that would enable them to kill an enemy soldier and capture his weapon. This is a type three, three hole model that was made from sheet metal stampings that were spot welded together on top of the smooth bore barrel. It has the cast zinc-aluminum cocking knob on the rear of the pistol, with a number (3) cast into the cut-out on the left side, with the alignment pin on top cast into the cocking knob. This heavy cast aluminum cocking handle was rotated to the side to allow loading through a gate. The base of the grips was hollowed out to hold 10 more rounds. The left side of the grip has a small and very old looking label affixed to the pistol that says "Mobiloi", the significance is unknown to the describer.
Very good overall, with a nice even old aged brown patina on most of the pistol, obviously from actual field use. The cocking knob has some minor chips around the firing and alignment pin, however it still functions correctly. A very unique WWII pistol.
