This is an example of a Model 1864 Joslyn breech-loading carbine that was purchased by the Ordnance Department from the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut .The carbine has the casehardened iron mountings and hooded firing pin that distinguish the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel and oiled walnut stock. The barrel is fitted with a two-leaf, folding, rear sight. The lock plate is marked: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO. / STONINGTON CONN / 1864" ahead of the hammer. The rear of the breechblock is marked with the 1861 and 1862 patent dates and the serial number, "14694" is located on the top of the breechblock. The heel of the buttplate is marked: "US". Joslyn was an effective and popular carbine that was widely issued to Federal Cavalry throughout the Civil War.
Very good. The barrel retains most of the original blue finish with a few minor dings. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dark mottled patina. The stock shows signs of some sanding and refinishing and remains very good with some overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
