This is an example of a Sharps Model 1859 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1861 that was subsequently converted to cartridge for the Indian Wars. There are no visible barrel markings. The rear sight spring is marked "R..S. LAWRENCE/ PATENTED/ FEB 15th 1859", "R. S. LAWRENCE' PAT/ APRIL 12th 1859 " and "C. SHARPS' PAT./ OCT. 5th 1852." on the lock plate, and the serial number appears on the upper tang. German silver front blade sight, adjustable rear sight graduated to 800 yards and smooth forearm and straight grip stock without the patch box and steel buttplate. Saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the stock at the grip area.
Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina, showing some signs of cleaning and some scattered minor pitting on the barrel. The moderately worn wood is good, there are three small holes on each side of the stock behind the wrist and two on the right side of the forearm that have been filled and there are a few minor gouges on the underside of the stock, otherwise there are a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
