Built with blued steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single bead sight on the matted flat solid rib which is marked with a gold "1" at the base, factory markings on the tubes, 1 3/4 inch wedges of scroll engraving at the breech, 1956 dated Spanish proof marks, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to the coin finished sidelock action which displays highly attractive near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding a gold inlaid monogram "HEJ" on the triggerguard, carved fences, and a trio of relief gold inlaid game scenes. The game scenes consist of a trio of mallards alighting on a pond on the left lockplate, a pair of grouse in flight on the underside, and a setter flushing a pair of pheasant cocks on the right. The gun is signed "KURT JAEGER, MAINZ" on the left side of the action. Kurt Jaeger was a German engraver whom engraved many guns for American soldiers stationed in Germany after World War II, at which time he had set up a shop in Mainz, right across from the Wiesbaden Rod & Gun Club of the American Air Force. The gun features bushed firing pins, hidden third fastener, clipped fences, a Miller single trigger, and a tang mounted manual safety with gold inlaid "S" indicator. The gun is fitted with a handsomely figured and checkered forend with carved accents, engraved forend iron, and horn tip inlay as well as a pistol grip stock with the same carved accents, horn inlaid teardrop drop points, a horn grip cap, horn inlay at the top of the comb, raised cheekpiece, and a Pachmayr recoil pad. Included is a second matching numbered and engraved 27 1/2 inches set of barrels with gold "2" and a non-matching takedown case that houses the set. Barrel measurements for the extra set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured at 16.8mm (.661 inches); choke constriction .021/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.029 inches. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at 16.8mm (.661 inches) and measured .657 inches; choke constriction .018/.033 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.025 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 11/16 inch drop at heel; 14 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 4 oz.
Exceptionally fine as engraved by Kurt Jaeger, retaining 99% blue/coin, and gold finishes with minor handling evidence, crisp carving, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good. The extra barrel set is also exceptionally fine.
