This is a fine example of a WWII U.S. Army contract Remington Model 1903A4 sniper rifle manufactured in the early part of the first block of U.S. Army contract serial numbers. These rifles were issued during WWII, again in Korea and even into Vietnam. The barrel is marked "R A/ordnance bomb/8-43", and the receiver is marked "U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3" correctly offset on the left side, over serial number. The rifle has the correct 1903A4 sniper rifle bolt with the "R" mark on the underside of the bolt handle, and "227-44-0171" on the extractor. The rifle has a Redfield marked scope base installed on the receiver which is fitted with an all blued, U.S. military contract M84 sniper scope. These M84 scopes were an improvement over the early M73B1 scopes that were usually issued during Korea with some into Vietnam. The scope has an all blued metal finish with the standard post/cross-hair reticle and is fitted in a set of the military 7/8 inch split scope rings. It is correctly marked on the nomenclature plate with "TELESCOPE M84/SERIAL NUMBER 24587", and comes with its original rubber eyecup. It has all the correct stamped components, such as the barrel bands, trigger guard, sling swivels and buttplate. It comes fitted with correct late WWII style, scant-grip "C" stock and matching walnut handguard. The stock is stamped on the left side with several factory/depot cartouches that include the original Remington boxed "FJA" with "AOD" and "AA" overstamped. The underside in front of the trigger guard is also correctly stamped with numerous Remington sub-inspector proofs, along with a partial circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area with a second "P" proof overstamped. It comes with a WWII type, unmarked, web sling.
Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 98% of an early post WWII, light green parkerized finish with only minor edge and high spot wear. The stock and handguard are both very fine, also as arsenal refurbished, with only minor handling marks and clear cartouches and proof marks overall. The scope retains 98% of its original blued finish with only a hint of edge wear and clear sharp optics with a intact reticle. Mechanically excellent.
