This two barrel set consists of two 12 gauge sets. Both sets have front and mid bead sights on the matte vent rib marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER FOR JAMES EDWARD YOUNG". Both have 2 1/2 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving on the breech end, Winchester proofs with jeweled flats, lugs, ejectors and breech face, 3 inch chambers, and choked WS-1 and WS-2 on one set, (currently the spare set), full/modified marked on the primary set, and marked "1" on the lug and modified/full on the other, marked "2" on the lug. Each has its own extra fancy full fleur-de-lis hand checkered beavertail forearm with ebony forend insert and scroll engraved and jeweled hardware. Both sets are marked with the matching serial number on the flats and on the forearm hardware and wood. The forearms are also marked "1" and "2". Each barrel flat is marked with the Winchester oval proof, and the barrels are Winchester Proof Steel. The top rear of the left barrel is marked "MODEL 21 WINCHESTER 12 GAUGE 3 IN. CHAM./MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN." The action features extensive floral scroll with the same pattern on the break lever and trigger guard. Each side of the action features an oval panel with a gold inlaid hunting dog in a field scene, two gold inlaid pheasants in a field scene in a circle on the bottom, and the trigger guard has a gold inlaid dogs head. The water table is jeweled, Winchester proofed and marked with "MADE IN U.S.A." "MODEL 21" is over the address. Single gold trigger with selector, tang mounted manual safety and mounted with a nicely figured fleur-de-lis checkered walnut pistol grip stock with engraved, gold inlaid wire bordered, gold inlaid "GRAND/AMERICAN" metal grip cap, leather wrapped recoil pad and gold initial oval inscribed "J/E/Y". The set is complete in a hard leather Winchester takedown case with leather corner protectors, gold "J.E.Y." embossed leather tag on the outside top of the canvas cover, gold embossed "J.E.Y." on the lid, Winchester label on the inside of the lid and maroon felt lining. Length of pull is 14 inches. The accompanying factory letter confirms the configuration as well as the second barrel set and states the shotgun was built for James Edward Young and finished on October 5, 1972.
Excellent plus. 98% plus original blue/gold inlaid finish overall; including the extra set of barrels, with only slight handling/storage marks. The wood is also excellent with slight handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The canvas cover is fine with some light staining and wear, and the case is excellent. One will look a long time to find a finer example of a much sought after Grand American Model 21!
