Holland & Holland has been making some of the finest arms in the world since 1835 and continues this tradition of excellence to this day nearly 190 years later. This rifle was manufactured between 1924 and 1939 according to information given on page 335 of Donald Dallas' "Holland & Holland: 'The Royal' Gunmaker" landing this fine rifle in the heart of England's "Golden Age" of gunmaking. Built with blued steel chopperlump barrels featuring a matted ramped white beaded blade front sight, flip-up single leaf rear sight marked both "150" and "200" bases for mounting a scope on the matted rear raised quarter rib, and a sling eyelet on the underside. NEW BOND STREET, LONDON." on the right and left respectively and are marked "7 m/m 'MAGNUM' FLANGED CARTRIDGE." and "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the top and bottom ribs respectively. The rifle bears correct period London proof marks listing the cartridge as 7mm with a 2.5 inch case filled with 36 grains Cordite MKI and topped with a 140 grain bullet. The barrels are fitted to a magnificent casehardened hand detachable bolstered sidelock action with displays highly attractive extensive floral scroll engraving surrounding "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" signature banners and bright pins on either lockplate and "ROYAL MODEL" as well as "HOLLAND'S/SINGLE/TRIGGER" engraved on the underside before extending to the toplever, triggerguard, and extended tangs. The rifle features bushed firing pins, a right hand rolled triggerguard, gold centerline cocking indicators on either lockplate, the aforementioned single trigger, and a tang mounted manual safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. Included is a fine oak & leather takedown case fitted with a brass plaque on the lid inscribed "S. DIEFENTHAL/NEW ORLEANS" as well as a Holland & Holland trade label and H&H registration label numbered to the gun. The case holds an extra set of firing pins, a leather sling, H&H oiler, snap caps, funnel, firing pin removal turnscrew, and cleaning tools. The length of pull is 13 5/8 inches. Weight 8 lbs. 12 oz.
Very fine overall, retaining 95% of the professionally refurbished blue finish on the barrels with some minor tiny spotting on the left as well as some professionally reapplied bluing, 97% rich original case colors on the action with a small area of spotting at either signature banner, some slight muzzle wear, and minor handling evidence. The wood has been wonderfully freshened and shows a few minor scratches and pressure marks as well as sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with evidence of a well travelled life. Do not miss this chance to own a beautiful example of a "golden age" rifle from one of England's finest makers!
