Fine Damascus steel barrels with a single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked "J. P. CLABROUGH & BROS. LONDON. FINE DAMASCUS" along with a small gold inlaid cross and platinum dots at the breech end, light engraving at both the breech and muzzles, correct period Birmingham black powder proofs, and chambers measured at 2 1/2 inches with a single extractor. The coin finished receiver and hammer locks display beautiful extensive scroll engraving interspersed with fine platinum and gold inlays and bordered by alternating gold and platinum inlaid dots. The engraving and inlays continue onto the hammers, the toplever, and the triggerguard with the tangs showing no inlays but the same fine engraving. The gun features rebounding hammers and a set of double triggers. The wood shows exceptional figure and fine multi-point checkering on the splinter forend which has a horn tip inlay as well as engraved fittings inlaid with gold and platinum and the round knob pistol grip stock which shows teardrop carved drop points and a horn buttplate which is carved with scroll designs as well as a lion. Included with the gun is an oak & leather takedown case containing a nickel oiler. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .737/.737 inches; choke constriction .010/.028 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.026 inches; 2 inch drop at comb; 3 5/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs.
Very fine overall as professionally refurbished, showing smooth grey on the barrels and strong Damascus patterning, nearly all of the coined finish on the action as well the gold and platinum, minor handling evidence, and sharp checkering on the replacement stock and forend. The case is fair with absent latch. Mechanically excellent. A chance for an exceptional and very tasteful precious metal inlaid double!
